A beautiful Curradine Barnes Wedding

Curradine Barnes Wedding Photography

Welcome to this sneak peak of the amazing wedding of Sam and Dan at the fantastic Curradine Barnes Wedding Venue, Worcestershire.

As this is a sneak peek, we will save the story of the day for the full blog post, plus you may also notice, we are starting to rebrand as Fab Portraits, more about that later on the blog.

Since this is not the wedding story, I will tell you a few bits and bobs about why I like the photos etc, thought processes and so on,  Curradine Barnes not only is one of the most popular wedding venues with couples, its one of the most popular venues with wedding photographers.  If your getting married at Curradine Barnes, you are going to get some truly amazing and spectacular photo opportunities.

In the photo below, Sam is ready to walk down the aisle having just put on her beautiful wedding dress.  This shot was taken about 5 minutes before she walked down the aisle.  I love the contrast between her, her dress and the amazing rustic feel of the bridal dressing areas at Curradine Barnes.

The wedding service – Love this look, they both look so very happy !

In the shot below, this was taken just seconds before it started to rain, the clouds are pretty much as they were that day, we have used a trick called HDR (High Dynamic Range) to capture all the details in the sky and the dress etc, but I LOVE this shot.

Again, just happy smiling faces !

The group shot is one of my favorites, because we like to do it differently, we use a 15 foot pole and take the photo with the venue in the shot, most photographers take in from upstairs with just the empty courtyard in the photo,  we remote control the camera using magic hardware and software and it produces some fabulous shots you normally dont get

Again, one of my favorite shots, this is of the whole of Curradine Barnes – its a panoramic photo, meaning its actually 6 photos joined together to give you the one photo, but this really shows off the venue beautifully, it would look amazing in their album as a double page spread.  The first Time I photographed a wedding at Curradine Barnes that tree in the middle of the photo was half that size.

This is just me playing, at the back of the room where you get marred at Curradine barnes, there is this plant roots / growth and it has been interspersed  with fairy lights, its beautiful an makes for a great feature
lights !

The new gardens make for GREAT wedding formal photos, we happened to luck out, it was simply breath taking

gardens at curradine barnes

This is the first time I have shot in this room, its part of the old farm house.  This photo was taken just after the “angry skys” photo and its pouring with rain, but the photos go on ! – we have the front door open and all the light is natural light apart from the lamp over Sam’s head.  I just loved the simplicity of this setting and thought it fitted the whole scene beautifully

This shot will appeal to no one probably but photographers,  agian I was playing with HDR – it was a very bright day outside, and inside the barn its fairly dark, normally its impossible to get a shot that shows off both the inside and the outside, but we managed it, I even like the fact the candles look warm and glowy !

While the couple where being photographed by Claire, I snuck across the road and took a few closeups, again I love this shot, Sam’s flowers look fabulous, a gorgeous bouquet for a fabulous bride on an amazing day !

I have always LOVED the room the couples wedding breakfast takes place in its so rustic and warm feeling, a truly fabulous welcoming room that everyone seems to love

Worcestershire Wedding Photography Arley Arboretum

A beautiful summers day wedding at the amazing Arley Arboretum, Arley, Worcestershire.

This past weekend I was “working”  for “The photographer next door” aka Alex Sharp, from Alex Sharp Photography.    Alex had a wedding at Arley Arboretum and as I had a weekend off, when she happened to mention she needed someone to cover a couple of hours of ‘second shooting’ I jumped at the chance.

Wedding photography is a passion as well as a job, and as the lead photographer you sometimes miss out on the fun side of the job, I love stalking the guests and trying to capture fun candid shots while the wedding couple are off having their wedding formals taken.  Normally its me taking the group shots and my assistant / second shooter gets to do the mingling and stalking, so it was a great break.  I will often second shoot for other photographers if I don’t have a wedding on a weekend, as it trains the mind and the eye to see the things that can often be missed if your too busy concentrating on the ‘bigger picture’

When I say the wedding photographer next door, I literally mean next door, Alex and I share studio adjoining walls, we often have a coffee and chat about things, help each other out with any little projects, help at weddings and so on, its a huge benefit to both of us.  Some photographers see every other photographer as competition but Alex and I have a great collaboration philosophy and love nothing more than sharing a coffee and packet of biscuits.

Anyway back to the amazing wedding at Arley Arboretum, and I have to say the couple were blessed by amazing weather, I used my time ‘second shooting’ to try new things out and shoot unusual detail shots and candids that I normally have my assistant / second shoot capture and I have to say its great fun.

Arley Arboretum is a relatively new wedding venue in Worcestershire however after talking with Dave the estate manager, its obvious that they have big plans, with weddings booked for 2015, 2016 and 2017 I can easily see this becoming one of the more boutique wedding photography venues in Worcestershire.

If your planning on getting married at Arley Arboretum your in for a great treat, its simply magnificent, here are a few shots from my day stalking guests, looking for cool details and just enjoying being out in the sun with my camera and not feeling too much of the pressure of photographing the most important day of a couple life !

I hope you enjoy.

My first photo of the day, the amazing marque at Arley Arboretum – the weather was just perfect

Looking for unusual shots while Alex made sure everyone knew what they were doing, here I saw a couple of hand fulls of confetti

and a trick I normally do, have my second shooter behind the couple, you get some amazing shots, so I wanted try one from behind

An Alice in Wonderland Themed Wedding

The Amazing Wedding of Hannah and Dave

A Beautiful Malvern Wedding

Hello there,

I had been waiting for the wedding of Hannah and Dave for so long it seems to me, from the very first time I met the couple I was really excited about this wedding.  First off although I will refer to it as a wedding technically it was an Humanist Ceremony.

This wedding is a prime example of the detail and planning brides put into their big day and why I feel its such an honor being asked to photograph it for them.  I remember talking to Hannah on the day itself and as you will see from the photos the attention to detail that she and Dave put in is amazing – one of the themes of the day was China Tea Cups and Hannah has spent 18 months visiting hundreds of antique shops tracking down individual cups and saucers for every guest.  There was a tie in with Up North the home to British Tea so hence the theme.

Its very rare indeed as a wedding photographer to come across something so totally different an something you have never seen before but Hannah pulled it off – her table plan was a HUGE home made paper machay tea pot with a REAL teabag at in the pot leading up to the persons name – each person took their name place and tea bag off the board to the table then after the wedding breakfast the catering staff went around with hot water and topped up everyone’s tea cup with their tea bag in it and made a delicious cup of tea – NEVER SEEN THAT BEFORE – EVER !

Because this wedding was so totally different the blog post is going to be a little different also – its going to be about details and people more than story telling – The wedding took place in the middle of a field, the couple were surrounded by their closest friends and family – the guests then partied away in the field and had the time of their lives.  It was a great wedding from a photography point of view, it was very relaxing, very pretty and full of great and interesting people.

So lets start telling the story

As you may well know I have a penchant for beautiful wedding dresses and Hannah’s was truly magnificent, it was by my favorite designer – Ian Stuart Bridal – You will also know I love my taking photos of wedding dresses and I have a bit of a reputation of going to any lengths to get good shots – It seems that I also have a reputation for hanging dresses in trees etc – well lets dispell that myth right now,

For Hannah’s dress shot I took it in the garden and hung it on a Pagola, not a tree 🙂 – I dont take dresses outside lightly however the  I was challenged to find a spot in the house that would do the dress justice – Mum’s living room was truly stunning and I could have shot it in the window which provided some of the best views across the Malvern’s I have ever seen but the lighting was just wrong – so I asked Hannah if she would mind me taking it outside – She chuckled and said she had a feeling I would be asking that question and was expecting it. – Without batting an eyelid she said yes – I am sure I could hear MUM’s jaw hit the floor and a huge gulp but Nikki and I treated the dress with all the respect and reverence such a beautiful garment demands and returned it in pristine condition !

As I was saying earlier Hannah planned everything and had a lot of hands on input into the wedding day –  right down to as we arrived she was making the bouquet’s and sorting out the flowers – not the most glamourous photo but one that captures the shear magnitude of the task in hand

while we shot the dress Hannah finished the flowers then started on her makeup – we try to keep out of the way for these moments and shoot them more like a fly on wall so while they may not be the most perfectly posed shots they are a true representationof what happened on the couples wedding day

Well before long it was time for Hannah to pop on that beautiful wedding dress – once she was in it, we went outside for a few shots – I used those beautiful views of the Malverns I was talking about as a background

Then it was time for Hannah to make her way to the field for the ceremony – For the trip she was being driven in one of Dad’s classic car’s – I used it to frame Hannah as she walked to the car

then it was off to meet up with the groom

Take a peek at this – HOW STUNNING is this wedding venue – it has to be the best wedding venue in Malvern IMHO

and just take a look at what the inside looked like – remember pretty much everything you see was done by Hannah, Dave and friends.

The Teapot I was talking about earlier

The name places

The tea cups !

The details were not limited to the inside alone, The Tie Dave wore was made specially for him  and I used this as a backdrop to photograph the rings on

and a few shots of Dave before Hannah arrived – here with his best man just chillin

something a little more formal

and here with the boys / escorts for the bridesmaids / ushers

and before long, the bridal car comes thru the gate carrying Hannah and her dad

Then its that magical time, the time where dad takes the bride, walks her down the aisle to meet the man of her dreams – I love the expression in the second photo – I which I knew what was going thru Hannah’s mind at this precise moment

and then the one of the most amazing weddings I have photographed in a very long time

Whenever I am photographing a wedding I always keep my eyes open for something out of the ordinary – and its often children that give you some great images (more kids shots in a little while) – with eveyrones attention on the reader here in this photo, I spotted this young man watching something happening over my shoulder – he was focused so intently on it that I just loved this photo

The balloons played a big part in the wedding and in the photos (as you will see in a while) but it was pretty windy so proved a little bit of a challenge but made for great photos – I kept thinking of The Prisoner TV show  for some reason 🙂  Then it was time for the big Kiss and the walk back down the aisle and for the party to begin !

Soon after this I snagged the couple for a few formal shots – well when I say formal I mean some of my more stylized or ‘signature’ type images – I loved this shot

Even dad was getting in on the action

and a few random shots of guests just having a good relaxing time and enjoying the day

And this has to be one of my favorite shots that dont include the bridal party from the day – This young man was a photographers dream – he loved the camera and followed me around for a good chunk of the day

and a few from the more formal photos taken on the day

The shot below was taken as I was taking the photo of the boys above – this was one of the reactions of one of the guests to seeing such a beefy bunch of guys in one place 🙂

Then it was onto the wedding breakfast followed by the speeches – as is becoming more and more popular the bride gave a speech, this year I have had 6 brides so far give speeches – something that is taking off I think.

The Best man’s Speech – I have to say this was one of the most entertaining speakers I have seen this year – he had all of the guests attention and got a huge bunch of laughs !

Then it was time for the slideshow followed by the first dance

As you may know (if your a regular visitor to my blog) but I use a lighting assistant for a lot of my wedding photography but generally dont try to get them in the shot – but I think the lights add to this photo

Then it was outside for a couple of special photos – the sun had set a long time ago and with using creative lighting I managed to pull of a couple of GREAT portraits of the couple – The balloons are back and as I said before I think they add something special to the photos

and that was it for us, our part of the day was over – it wast time to let the couple party till the small hours but I couldnt stop myself grabbing one final shot of the wedding venue – what an amazing day I had had, it was really really  fun.  Nikki and I talked about it all the way home and still talk about it to this day – this will always be our Alice in Wonderland Wedding (not that thats what Hannah was aiming for but it has that magical quality to it for us)

Well it just leaves me to say a HUGE congratulations to the happy couple, Hannah, Dave thanks much for choosing me to be a part of your big day – next time your organizing a party on this kind of scale – give me a bell ! – Enjoy married life guys you really rock !

Hope you have enjoyed this look at the wedding of Hannah and Dave,

Claire and Nick – Engagement Shoot

Worcestershire Wedding Photography

Malvern Hills Engagement Shoot

Here are the happy couple – Claire and Nick – Enjoying a sunset on top of the Malvern Hills – something I am sure they doubted would ever happen !

worcestershire wedding photography

Not for those reasons but Claire and Nick seem like my ‘Bogey Couple’ – For one reason or another we had planned to shoot last weekend but it never happened, then today we met up at 4pm (the clocks went forward today so it was actually 3pm) All was going well till I found out I had left a battery I needed for the shoot on the table at home –  I felt like a dick I have to be honest.  I packed off Claire and Nick for a drink and offered to buy them lunch while I grabbed another battery (Nikki was bringing one over for me but the whole thing would take about an hour) – well an hour later, battery in hand and ready to shoot – we met up again at the base of British Camp in the Malvern Hills.

I think sometimes god was smiling down on me as that hour allowed the harsher sun to dissipate a little  and we had beautiful soft directional light – with a great golden colour and softness to it. – we set off for our hike up the hills.  Claire (or Kate) as I knicknamed her due to what I see as a resemblance to Kate Middleton (Our future Queen)  and Nick are a GREAT fun couple who were up for anything including playing football on top of the Malvern hills.

So here you go, a few from today – I am thrilled to bits with the photos, I told Claire and Nick that I would have them up for them to see in the morning so at the time of posting I dont know what they think of them !

Oh, Claire, Nick – Thanks much for being so patient, I am sure it was not easy 🙂  but it was so worth it……….

As we were walking back to the car, I spotted a gate, I had Claire climb on top of it, then just as I was about to take the photo, the dog you see came running over and wanted some love.

Just after we left the hills, we rounded a corner just as the sun was setting – we pulled over on the side of the road jumped out and shot 3 photos, by the time we got to number 4, the sun had set.

Hope you enjoy this sneak peek.
