Holdsworth House Wedding Photography

Black and White Wedding Photography

The Wedding of Carl and Jo

.

Hello there, something TOTALLY different from me today !

Yesterday saw me ‘Second Shooting’ a wedding with PAUL ALEXANDER PHOTOGRAPHY –  The wedding took place at the fabulous Holdsworth House in Halifax in Yorkshire !   A second shooter is not the lead photographer and grabs shots while the key photographer does works his or her magic.

One of the reasons I second shoot if I dont have a wedding of my own on a certain day is it keeps my hand in, I get to try stuff that I would not normally do at a wedding that a client is paying me for – Yes as a Second your job is to provide the lead photographer with useable images that they can use.  Once I have the useable stuff in the bag I then try stuff – sometimes it works and sometimes it does not – This time it WORKED SO SO SO SO SO WELL !

I have always wanted to shoot an entire wedding from start to finish in Black and White – I LOVE black and white photography and especially Black and White wedding photography.  I am waiting for the day a client comes to me and asks for 100% black and white coverage on their wedding day.  Because I was shooting mainly black and white I was also able to shoot at a much higher ISO – this is term that basically means how much light you need – the higher the ISO the less light you need – Since I shot 90 % of this wedding at an iso over 1000 – I didnt need to use much flash – this is something I love playing with.

I want to thank Paul for inviting me on his wedding and offer a very special thanks to Jo and Carl for allowing me to play and practice on what is probably the biggest day of their life – thanks guys – I had a GREAT time, loved every second of it and didn’t once think the people up north spoke funny !

Enjoy the photos

Remember we cover the whole of the UK – wherever your getting married – we are your local photographers !

Redhouse Barn Stoke Prior Wedding Photographer | Hannah and Dan

Hartlebury Church / Redhouse Barn Stoke Prior

The wedding of Hannah and Dan’s was probably the wedding I thought about most this year – The wedding was on the 29th of December 2010 and as you can probably remember the week before the UK got totally swamped with snow.  We had around 10 – 12 inches and 3 days before the wedding there was still 6 – 8 inches on the ground.  I am fortunate that I could walk to Hartlebury Church if needed but getting to Redhouse Barn in Stoke Prior, Bromsgrove would be a whole different story.  But the gods must have been smiling because there was a major thaw for 2 days before the wedding and the roads were just about clear !!!

So I turned up to Hannah’s mums house ready to start my day, the house was in full swing with girls getting ready everywhere you looked.  I normally start off with a nose about for locations for photos and things that are important to photograph, flowers, details etc etc and The flowers Hannah had chosen were amazing to say the least.

While I was looking around I spotted a beautiful blue box with white ribbon on it – having lived in New York for a number of years I instantly knew what this box was – it was a Tiffany’s box and I knew it would contain a special gift for the bride on her wedding day – after checking if it was okay to open I snagged a couple of photos.

wedding gift

tiffany snowflake

as you will see later, the snowflake was a theme of the wedding.

So I went in search of the bride and her wedding dress – I found Hannah having her hair done so grabbed a couple of photos and then went dress hunting.

and after hearing a lot of giggling went down stairs to find Hannah about to pop the bubbly !

then after a slurp slurp it was time for Hannah to pop on her wedding dress – naturally when I say pop on her wedding dress it not quite that simple – buttons buttons buttons – the back of the dress had hundreds of buttons on it 🙂

Then it was a quick dash downstairs to get shots of Hannah coming down and shots with Mum and Dad, talking of Dad when I got downstairs, If found that Dad was having a few issues with his neck tie

then it was outside for a final photo of Hannah, Mum and Dad before I dashed to the church to to get shots of the boys and the arrival of the bride.

With the weather changing so dramatically it turned out we had a foggy day, there was still a bit of snow on the ground, it was cold but I thought it looked amazing for photos as you will see shortly.  I arrived at St James Church in Hartlebury

st james church hartlebury

and went inside to find the boys already hard at work as ushers etc, I grabbed hold of Dan and the boys and grabbed a quick shot at the back of the church

groomsmen at st james hartlebury

and after talking to the vicar and getting instructions on what I could and could not shoot, I went outside to wait for Hannah to arrive.  The scene looking from the church down the drive onto the stourport (direction) road was beautiful – The weather made it all the better in my opinion.

The following shot is in both colour and black and white as I can choose which I like the most

then it was SHOWTIME – normally I work with my assistant Helen however due to the weather conditions Helen could not make it so during the wedding itself I had to work twice as hard to cover all the angles – I am very thankful  to the officents at St James for allowing me to move around – some church’s let you some dont and its one of the reasons I like working with an assistant.

Then it was outside for the confetti shot

and a big beautiful kiss

then it was into the cars for a quick dash over to Stoke Prior in Bromsgrove to the stunning Redhouse Barn wedding venue.

As you can see it was still pretty wet and  there was a little un-melted snow on the ground, one of the problems is the grass areas were very wet so we ended up shooting all the photos inside but this did not detract from a truly amazing wedding venue.

during the drinks reception the guests were entertained by a fabulous musician, unfortunately I didn’t get one of his cards but he has one of mine, if he drops me an email I will pop his details here as he was brilliant

They also have an amazing bridal bedroom at Redhouse Barn so I took the couple up there for a few ‘nice’ photos

Then it was downstairs for the cutting of the cake

During the wedding breakfast I put together the slideshow (we normally run a slide show for the couple just before the first dance)

Redhouse barn has the BEST equipped AV system I have seen at any wedding venue, we just had to plug a laptop into the wall and a BIG screen dropped out of the ceiling for the slideshow.

Here is a shot of the bride and groom watching the slideshow with friends and family.

and as I was setting up the lights for the first dance I grabbed a shot of Dan and his best man just to test them out – notice the light behind them, this is one of my lights used to make sure we get GREAT first dance photos – you will see them in a minute.

So Dan and Hannah had a band for the evening entertainment

band at redhouse barn

Then it was time for the first dance – the dance floor at Redhouse barn is a bit special 🙂

then all the kids joined in – this was very much a children friendly wedding which seemed to put great big smiles on the faces of both the bride and groom

The kids were jumping for joy on the dance floor

and last but not least, the sign of any good band / dj is how he / they fill the dancfloor !

By the time I packed up it was close to 11pm, after big hugs and kisses from the bride and a smaller hug from the groom – its a guy thing 🙂 I said my goodbys and made my exit.

It just goes to prove that all you need to get married is someone who your truly and madly in love with, someone to say the magic words and friends to share the day with.  The weather did not play ball but it was no problem at all, Hannah and Dan had an amazing day, it was my last wedding of 2010 and one that i thoroughly enjoyed.

I just wish to pass along my congratulations to Hannah and Dan, wishing them all the best.

take care, hope you have enjoyed this look at their special day.

ciao

Himley House Winter Wedding Photography

The wedding of Tracey & John

Getting married at Himley House, Dudley, West Midland

Sneak Peek – Just a few teasers……

A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of photographing the wedding of Tracey and John at the stunning Himley House situated between Kingswinford and Wombourne Just southwest of Birmingham in the West Midlands.  What made this wedding a little unusual was the days before it snowed and snowed so there was a TOTAL blanket of snow on the ground.  The view of Himley House in the snow was magnificent.

We arrived about 2 hours before the wedding, or about an earlier than we normally would, we spent that hour taking photos of Himley House in the snow and lots of detail shots.

Me laying in the snow taking the above photo

The bride and Groom by the Christmas Tree at by the main staircase – this is why I love winter weddings.  Winter wedding photography has its own challenges including the cold, bright glare and the reluctance for couples to go outside for photos, but with winter weddings come Christmas weddings and all the associated bonuses that go with it.

The Christmas tree at Himley House looked amazing

I love this shot of Tracey taken during the service

The good news for us is that Tracey and John were excited about a winter wedding so when I suggested we went outside for a few wedding photos in the snow, they were more than happy to oblige !

This shot taken at the golf club was taken while it was snowing, we had another few inches of snow during the reception

I hope you have enjoyed this sneak peek – Winter weddings are GREAT fun, so if your getting married in the winter, dont worry about the weather, if its cold and snowy it just makes for much prettier photos.

The Wedding of Katie & Simon

A Stunning Pembrokeshire Wedding

Followed by a reception at the Giltar Hotel Tenby – Wedding Photography by David Purslow

A couple of weeks ago I shot the wedding of Katie and Simon,  I had been looking forward to their wedding for a LONG LONG time.  Katie one of my facebook friends seemed to have booked me forever and a long time ago and over the last year or so we have been talking about it in the odd facebook messages back and forth – then it seemed to be getting closer and closer and then it was only a week away, then a day away and as I woke up for what turned out to be a stunning Pembrokeshire day it was time for Katie and Simon to get married.

Helen and I arrived at Katie’s mums house and before we could even get thru the door there were offers of Tea, coffee and bacon sandwiches 🙂  I knew this was going to be a great day, and to be honest after a great start like that, it just got better and better.  There were what seemed like dozens of girls all milling around the house but I think it was actually less than 15 so we set about shooting background stuff and the dress shot.  Well with so many girls in one place as you can imagine there were a million dresses as well and stuff everywhere – so while standing in the bedroom Katie would be getting ready in I happened to notice her mum had one of those washing lines that went 20 feet in the air – half joking but preying for  yes answer we asked Katie if she minded if we ‘hoiked’ her dress up in the air to take some fun and funky shots of it – being a super trooper that she is, she said yes (wait for the Magnificent Seven to see the dress shot !)

And that pretty much was how the whole day went, The wedding was GREAT, Katie and Simon were very relaxed even when during the confetti shot someone actually threw a whole box – un opened which hit poor old Simon in the head (but the up side is it made a great photo) – After the wedding Katie and Simon wanted to get a few shots with Pembroke Castle in the background so with the help of our fabulous Chauffeur from (Top Class Cars) we went and parked up for a few photos – then it was onto the Giltar Hotel in Tenby.  The Giltar is a very popular wedding venue in Tenby, Pembrokeshire and Malcolm and his staff certainly take GREAT care of EVERYTHING on the day.  One of the things photographers often need on a wedding day is a good strong mug of coffee from time to time and this was no bother at all for the guys at the Giltar.

After a few photos on the esplanade it was time for the wedding breakfast during which time we worked on the slideshow downstairs and chatted with Steve Briers (The DJ for the evening – great guy) – then after the wedding breakfast was over it was outside for a few more photos and then Simon and Katie allowed us around 45 minutes to head down to the beach for some more creative photos where we can take a little more time, use dramatic lighting and create something really nice for the album and the framed photos for the wall.

Then it was inside for an insane buffet, I have never seen so much food and it tasted as good as it looked – I also spotted a little teddy bear next to the cake – It was a gift from the hotel, a very nice touch and something I have never seen before at other venues – its a little keepsake but one that I am sure will mean a lot in the years to come.

Then it was slideshow time followed by the first dance.

This really was a cracking wedding, it was very obvious that Katie and Simon are madly in love with each other – you could just tell that by watching – I know its a strange thing to say considering it was their wedding day but there is something very special about the relationship these guys have and its really nice.

So it just leaves me to say a HUGE congratulations to Katie and Simon from Helen and myself, Nikki and Joshua and Soukie

Little details, big inspiration……….

Hello there dp here with a quickie for tonight,

I shot a fantastic wedding on Saturday, the detail the bride (Kirsten) had put into the table layouts was amazing, you will see more of what I am talking about in a few days when I  post up the blog story.

In the meantime it was quite a beachy themed wedding as per the venue – the couple were getting married at the Oxwich Bay Hotel on the Gower in West Wales.

Here is a pano shot of the whole bay, the very left hand side as you look at it is the hotel and the very right hand side is the marquee that you can see peeking above it.  However the backdrop is why The Oxwich Bay Hotel is a very sought after venue.

panorama of the Oxwich bay hotel wedding venue wales

There are shots you typically take at most weddings, the cutting of the cake, the confetti shot etc but what keeps me excited about wedding photography is that I get my inspiration from the couples themselves.

I arrived about 1/2 an hour early (than the time I was booked to start) which is something I like to do at all weddings, I then just take 30 minutes to wonder without my camera and look for ideas to jump out at me.  I still do that thing old time photographers do with the hand and the fingers where we make a frame and visualize what the photo would look like.  Anyway I walked into the Marquee and was shell shocked (sorry for the pun – you will see in a minute) by the view over the bay – from inside the marquee the views are to die for.

On every table Kirsten had created a little center piece, and surrounding it was a lovely shell with what looked like a giant pearl in the center – they looked fab.

An idea sprang into mind right there and then and I saw visions of the ring shot using the shell and the pearl – well This is part of the sequence of photos I shot.

Wide view showing the tale with the pearl and shell in place.

A little closer

much closer this time with rings

and finally the money shot, the ring shot

Also notice in this last photo, you can clearly see me 🙂 in the dead center of the pearl, then just to the left ofme is the flash – thats right even on this simple shot I used off camera flash to bring up the detail and fill in the shadows somewhat.  The flash was triggered by the Radio Poppers I love and use all the time.

wedding photographer gower swansea west wales

So we went from a simple table decoration to a beautiful ring shot and its because I took an extra 30 minutes of my time to just stop and take in all the little details the bride and groom had spent over a year planning.

Hope you like,

take care, off to bed now,

ciao
