Pet Portrait Photography

Dog Portrait Photography

for Birmingham, Worcestershire, Gloucestershire and The Cotswolds

Hello there,

Something very different from me today – normally I keep my portrait stuff off my wedding website however I am thinking of bringing the two sites together.

Pet portraits or pet photography is something I LOVE doing – People love their pets and often people want beautiful photos of their pets.

The beauty of pet photography is that as long as I have a car and a camera it can pretty much be done anywhere, we go to where the pets are.

This weekend saw me photographing Solly Dog – the biggest softest black Lab you ever did see.

A few months back I had posted photos of my mums dog which I shot on a black background, well Helen asked if I would shoot Solly, her pooch – so this weekend we took a portable studio on the road, and took a few shots of Solly.

These photos were actually taken in Helens Kitchen – once we were all setup we less than 5 minutes in total taking the photos.

Here are the results.

The brief:  Make Solly look majestic, black dog on black background – moody.

Here you go.  hope you like.

I should point out that you may want to view these in the dark, depending on your screen they may appear too dark, but trust me, play with your birghtness and they will jump right out at you.

Ok so you weren’t wrong I turned up the brightness on my screen and the photo almost jumped out at me!

I never thought of taking photos of my dog against a dark screen, it really does look effective.

I will be trying it out as I want a photo to put on a skin on my new phone. allows me to design my own skin for my phone so I think I will use a dark background to match my phone but also allow me to have a pic of my dog on it.

Hopefully I will be able to do something similar! Here’s to hoping so anyway.

So whats it like being photographed by me ?

Hi there,

Something a little different today.  In an effort to ‘jaz’ up the site a little, give it a bit more dynamism I have decided to add a video from one of my weddings last year.

The video is actually behind the scenes footage of me shooting, I also teach wedding photography (if you want to know more about that email me at

The video is an edited version of one that I share with my students so contains some technical data on the shots, but without putting the whole thing together again I would not have been able to add it so quickly.

This section is Fly on the wall stuff, it follows me shooting some of the Bridal Prep photos and also the Confetti shot and then onto the ‘Couples Alone Shoot’ – this was a 10 minute segment where the wedding guests left to go to the reception and The Bride, Groom and myself spent 10 minutes shooting a few more arty photo’s

What you will see is the way I shoot, I like to set the scene and then let the couple – You and your new husband have a bit of alone time while I shoot from a distance.  I am not one of those in your face photographers so use longer lenses most of the time to distance myself from you guys, this way you have intimate time together, can talk and chit chat and feel alone and all in love – I just take photos of it all.

In this short video you will see just how many great photos this alone 10 minutes produced.

I hope you like it.

What is this slide show at my wedding all about ?

Hello there,

Its a strange thing but I actually only meet about 25 – 30 % of the people who book me BEFORE the booking takes place, the rest book me based on the website, the blog and after extensive telephone or email conversations – or my soon to be added, pre wedding video conferencing.

The number one thing people ask about is the slideshow, how we do it, who chooses the photos, what equipment we use, how long it takes etc, etc, etc.

So I thought I would take a little time out to tell you a bit more about it.

I am going to use the Wedding of Liz and Hayden as my example, why ? – well it was my last wedding so everything is at hand, plus Liz did a great little video testimonial while Hayden was busy dancing the night away on the dancefloor.

If you look at this photo – completely unedited

wedding photography slideshow

This shows all the equipment we use.  On the floor is an Apple Mac Book Pro computer connected to a travel projector mounted on a Tripod.   The screen is a pop up screen that sits in the little black box you see at the bottom of the screen, we take the box, pop it on the floor, open the feet to stop it falling over and then just pop up the screen – setup time for the screen is around 20 seconds !!!! – putting away is quicker.

While your having your wedding breakfast we set up the laptop, offload (and backup) the photos so far, sort through them and choose around 1– – 150 of them, we then put them into a slideshow program called Iphoto and use this to run the show.  It takes us about an hour to do that so we have plenty of time.

Then just before your first dance we set the screen and projector up (5 mins or less) and run the show – the show typically runs for around 8 – 10 minutes and the DJ normally plays some nice background music.  After the slide show is over it takes us about 60 seconds to move the projector and computer and put away the screen – then its straight into your first dance. – Since EVERYONE wants to see your wedding photos the are in the room watching, so that means when you do your first dance everyone is there.

The photos in the slide show are UN EDITED – they are just as they come out of the camera (apart from a couple converted to b/w)

The slide shows let the couple see the kinds of photos taken of their wedding.  It also lets them choose the photos they would like to use for their thank you cards so when they get back from Honeymoon they are ready.

As you will see from my blog posts, the slide shows have a lot more photos but its more for the bride and groom since they spent months or even years planning the wedding – we shoot a whole range of photos that may not make the blog story but which still have very special memories for the couple.

Below is a video of the slideshow from Lia and Haydens wedding, the quality is not as good as the slideshow on the day as its had to be compressed to get it up online for you.

Hey Look – it’s Liz from this weekends wedding

Stunning Testimonial from a bride in her wedding dress

This weekend saw us shoot an amazing wedding – Liz and Hayden were SO UP FOR PHOTOS that we ended up having a 16 and half hour day from the time we left till we got back to Hotel Jack.

At the end of the night, Liz did a quick video testimonial for us – the video was shot in the bar at Gellifawr while the disco was in full swing and Hayden was strutting his stuff on the dance floor.

Sorry for the shaky video !

Thanks Liz – your a star x

Oh you can see a few of the photos from the day just below this post !

Sneak Peek – The Wedding of Liz and Hayden

Liz and Hayden getting married at Gellifawr

Wedding Photography by David Purslow

This is just a very quick sneak peek from what turned out to be one of my favorite weddings for a very very very long time.  What made this wedding so special for me is the couple, Liz and Hayden really wanted nice photos, put the time into the day to make sure they got nice photos and allowed me to try things without knowing what the outcome would be.

Its pretty funny but when I lived in Pembrokeshire I would travel up this way often for birmingham weddings.  Well Liz and Hayden are from Birmingham and were looking for a birmingham wedding photogapher willing to travel to Pembrokeshire – how spooky

Liz and Hayden got married at Gellifawr in Pembrokeshire in West Wales –

Gellifawr is a wedding photographers dream venue, its a perfect venue for creating great wedding photos in and around.  Fred, Michael and the whole team at Gellifawr really bend over backwards to make sure the couple have a great day – they take very good care of the photographers also, so a big thanks to Fred and the gang for looking after us again.

What I found pretty funny is that Liz and Hayden are from the Birmingham area and were searching for a Birmingham wedding photographer willing to travel to Pembrokeshire to shoot the wedding – (if you dont know I lived in Pembrokeshire for 7 years until February 2009) – so when they started searching for a Birmingham wedding photographer and found me – it was a match made in heaven.

Helen and I had a blast this weekend, so without any more wasted jabbering from me, here are 10 photos from the weekend – just a quick Sneak Peek as Liz told me she had turned into a blog stalker – I said I would get a few up so she could show friends at work etc.

Liz, Hayden – you guys ROCK – thanks so much for choosing us to be a part of your day – and thanks for being such amazing people and letting us do what we love to do and try to create special photos that are a cross between romantic, reportage, dramatic and just outright stunning.

talk to you soon,

and one from the mini portrait session we sneaked off for following the dinner, this photo of pentre ifan was taken around 9:30 at night, there is no photoshop tricks or trick photography involved – this is pretty much as it was taken on the night – I am sure Liz and Hayden will back me up on this one – this is one of those shots I had wanted for a long time and thanks to this fabulous couple they gave me the time to shoot it – well worth a quick trip out from the wedding.
