Quick update – 3 in 3 – What wonderful Weddings :-)

Just a very quick update, I got an email tonight from one of my up coming weddings, bride who commented that I had been a little quite on the blog for a few weeks so while sitting watching Sir Elton John on the TV I thought I would share just a quick few pictures with you.

The past few weeks have been a blur, totally crazily busy and to top it off it culminated with 3 weddings in 3 days and a total of 826 miles between them all.

I spent Friday in Swindon with Claire and Greg, Saturday in Pembrokeshire West Wales with Rebecca and Michael and Yesterday (Sunday) in Tewkesbury with Victoria an Andrew – I will post up full blog posts in the coming weeks but here is a one from each wedding

Reportage wedding photograhy – its all about moments

Reportage Wedding Photography

I would say I class myself as a reportage wedding photographer, although I also create some stunning portraits for my clients, 80 % of day is reactionary photography rather than shots I have manipulated, I would not class myself as a pure documentary wedding photographer – a good friend of mine and one of the top documentary wedding photographers in the country – Kevin Mullins – http://www.kevinmullinsphotography.co.uk/  is a pure documentary wedding photographer – the difference is Kevin simply (but amazingly)  documents the day as it unfolds in front of him- he even told me a story of one bride that called him up after the wedding to make sure he was okay because after the service she never saw him – when he showed her, her wedding photos she was amazing and overjoyed, I do something similar but I introduce lights when I feel the need is there and I setup a few special shots for the bride and groom.

My kind of client wants a good record of the day, photos from bridal preparations all the way through to the first dance – for this I light lots of the day with portable lighting, this is very discrete battery operated lighting that 99.9% of the time the couple are completely unaware its there,  I light the speeches, the first dance, the group shots and naturally I really go to down on the bride and groom photos.   The rest of the day I simply work with the light that is there, that could be room lights, candle lights, daylight etc.

To let you know what that looks like I thought I would share just a few photos from the wedding I photographed last weekend. – I will categorize the images as I go

So this set of images are from my wedding this past weekend of Sarah and Martin, held at the stunning Walton Hall in Warwickshire.

Specialty photo – setup in front of the hotel – lit with hotel lights and flash light.

As you can see most of the day is captured as it happens, there are times when I setup certain photos or light moments to bring out the full beauty of the photo.

Hope you like,

SNEAK PEEK

The winter wedding of Susie and Chris

Okay, this weekend saw me travelling almost a thousand miles for a wedding.  I drove the round trip of 911 miles to just south of Aberdeen in Scotland to the breath taking Drumtochty Castle for the wedding of Susie and Chris.

What makes this even more exciting is that Susie and Chris actually live in Australia and traveled over here for the wedding, so my 17 hours in the car pale into insignificance to the journey they made.  I was assisted on the day by Tom Astley an up and coming photographer from Manchester Tom can be found at http://www.tomastleyphotography.co.uk/

Okay, this is a sneak peek, I am totally knackered after the weekend, I set off at 9 am on Friday and got home at around 6:30 pm on Sunday and shot on Saturday from around 9:30 till around 10:30 in the evening, so I am taking today off !

I wanted to do a quick sneak peek as the couple are jetting off for their honeymoon and I am sure they would love to see a few of the pics before they go.

I only met the couple after arriving at Drumtochty Castle, as we checked in Chris heard our name and came running over to say hello.  The Susie came around the corner with a HUGE infectious smile on her face, that smile never left the whole time we were there as you will see.  One of the first things Susie said to me was she could not wait to see what I did with her wedding dress, she said she is a bit of a blog stalker and has seen some of my wedding dress shots so wanted me to top them – a challenge was set down, so off Tom and I went to scout the whole castle to see where we could shoot the dress.

This is what we came up with

drumtochty castle wedding photography

here it is a little closer, I should point out that when I asked her who’s dress she was wearing she looked at me with that HUGE smile and said, Oh, its an Ian Stuart wedding dress – as anyone who follows my blog will know I have a huge penchant for Ian Stuart wedding dresses, they are just so beautiful.

The Curradine Barns Wedding Photography | Laura and James

The amazing wedding of Laura and James  – Wedding: Claines Church Worcester

Wedding Reception – The Curradine Barns

.
Hello there,

A few weeks ago I shot a stunning wedding, it was the wedding of Laura and James.  Laura and James booked me ages ago and this one crept around, I was really looking forward to it because the wedding reception was at the stunning Curridine Barns.  I had an idea the wedding would be beautiful after hearing all the little details that were going into the day, but they really really did put on a fantastic wedding.

My day started off at their house and naturally with me I start with a dress shot.

wedding dress photo

and then I started mooching around for things to shoot, the house was full of really nice and romantic little notes, cards and best wishes, so I snapped a few while the girls were getting their makeup started.

and while I was on the details path, I captured all the details in one go.

and here Laura was taking a teary eyed look at her card that came along with the gift

then it was time to finish the makeup

before putting on that all important dress

and the shoes

at this point I jumped in my car and ran off to the church, The wedding was taking place at Claines Church which is a beautiful worcestershire wedding venue.  I was met by the very friendly and very happy Vicar  – Nick – or as I have renamed him Nick the Vic…… – Anyway NTV told me the church had just had all new lighting put in so it would make for some great photos and to be honest he was not kidding, it was perfect.  NTV also said as long as the couple didnt mind, and as long as I didnt use flash I could take photos throughout the whole service – what a GREAT vicar thinking of his couple, their memories and making the day special.

Here is the beautiful Claines Church

Soon enough it was time for Laura to arrive, she came with her dad in a vintage VW camper van

and then the moment every groom is dying to hear on his wedding day – YOU MAY KISS THE BRIDE

Then while the couple were signing the register, all the guests gave me a wave !

As is becoming the norm the confetti shot had to take place by the lychgate, so while the happy couple walked down, dad took a few minutes to toast the happy couple and celebrate !

then while the guests left to go over to the reception venue, I took the couple back in the church to shoot some pictures with the stained glass, unfortunately the windows were boarded up on the outside while some work was taking place so I didnt get the shot I wanted but we still got some interesting results.

Then it was back in the camper van and over to the wedding reception at Curradine Barns

curradine barns wedding venue worcestershire

When Mrs P and I were getting married we visited The Curradine Barns and we fell in love with the venue, as a worcestershire wedding venue it has everything you could possibly want, charm, elegance, it has the curb appeal your guests will love and its just outright bloody beautiful.  I went over the day before the wedding to scope it out for what lights I would need and met Laura and James there, they were dressing the venue and it was looking beautiful.

more kissing – there was a bit of theme of this in the day

and I just couldn’t resists a peek inside and spotted this on the dashboard – this will be my photo of the week next week – I thought it was a nice touch by the company.

and time for a few ‘semi formal photos’ – I am not known for formals, we shoot a few but most people want me for other stuff…..

boys will be boys

okay, not actually formals…….. but here are a couple

formal wedding photography

and I tried really hard to get this couple to book me for their wedding, they told me early in the day they were getting married, I took a few nice photos of them, but try as I might, it was not going to happen, I offered to photograph it for free and only food money and accommodation and travel – Oh, I forgot to mention they flew in from Australia for the wedding – I would love a wedding down under……..

All too soon, it was time for the wedding breakfast after which came the speeches.

dont ask……………..

While the guests were having their wedding breakfast, I had finished working on the slideshow and spotted the big chandellear hanging in the ball room, I got some lights out the car and set something up and then snagged the bride and groom – this is the result

then it was for the first dance and to get the party started.

and something a little more traditional.  I like to mix it up a little and create something different for the guests – I shoot both creatively lit first dance photos as well as normal first dance shots, that way the couple can choose their favorites.

and then it was time for everyone to get on the dancefloor

Normally that would be it, I usually end my blog stories with the first dance photos

BUT………..

I just wanted to share something with you – Take a peek at this – LOVE IT !!!!!!  This was setup in the corner for the guests !

and my all time favorite sweet forever is cola bottles – LOOK ! – I naturally had a couple with the kind permission of the couple, Soukie and Joshua had a little baggy each of sweeties when daddy got home.

What can I say – what an amazing wedding.

Congratulations to Laura and James for what was an awesome day – thanks to the staff at The Curradine Barns who looked after me and Thanks to you for taking the time to actually read my test on the blog stories and not just look at the pictures.

ciao for now.

Photo of the Week – 11 December 2011

Hello there,  a little late in the day to be posing but wanted to get the photo of the week in.

This shot was actually taken around 18 months ago, I was inspired by the venue and the dress to create something a little different so what I did was turn the camera into tungsten light balance which has a side effect of turning day light into a beautiful blue colour of light.

I placed a flash inside a small folding softbox (24 inches by 24 inches) just out of camera shot and put a tungsten gel over the flash to colour balance with the camera.  I had Vicki run towards the camera lifting her dress a little – I deliberately underexposed the background by around 1 1/2 stops which made the blue all the more pronounced and took the following shot.  It took around 2 – 3 short little runs from Vicki to get the shot used here but so worth the effort.

Red House Barn Stoke Prior Wedding Photography – Vanessa and Chris

An amazing Winter Wedding at Red House Barn, Stoke Prior Bromsgrove.

.
A few months ago I posted up an image from what I called my secret engagement session.  The reason it was secret is the engagement session for Vanessa and Chris was so we could create a guest signing book – since it was going to be a surprise, I didn’t blog those pictures – and in a strange twist I will blog them after the wedding sometime early next year.

Anyway back to the wedding of Vanessa and Chris.  From the second they walked into my studio I knew this was going to be an amazing wedding.  The couple told me they were planning on getting married at St. Peters Church in Astley and were having the wedding reception at Red House Barn in Stoke Prior.  Both of which I have photographed weddings at before and both of which are amazing wedding venues.

Over the past year I have heard little snippets about the wedding so when I woke up yesterday I was very excited.  I had arranged for a friend,  called Simon Revill to help me out, Simon is a Sheffield Wedding Photographer so had to travel some way, but he was free and said he fancies seeing how us boys down south do it…..  You can visit Simons Site at http://www.simonrevill.co.uk

So I started the day off at Vanessa’s mums house and was looking forward to the wedding dress shot, Vanessa had popped into the studio a week ago and told me all about the dress and the shoes, I couldn’t wait. The dress was just breath taking

christmas wedding

and the other bits and bobs that make up the day, the perfume, garter, shoes etc.

Did I mention the shoes were Swarovski Crystal Wedding Shoes ? – they were literately encrusted with hundreds of Swarovski crystals

and while taking about closeup’s here is a shot of Vanessa’s garter (which we will see later) and her engagement ring.

so while I was shooting all the detail shots, Vanessa was having her hair and makeup done,  Vanessa’s mum has a thing for mirrors which proved to be fantastic for me, there were so many shots I could take in different mirrors that I had a field day.

and while the tearier was going on I spotted a couple of little bridesmaids peeking thru the door.

Then it was downstairs to get dress, but before getting dresses a few presents were passed around including this one

then it was time to put on that amazing dress

and that was a lucky capture, I was just about to take the shot when Vanessa’s mum pulled in the ties on the back of the dress

Then it was off to the very pretty St Peters Church in Astley just outside of Stourport on Severn

I had actually visited the church on Friday and met Vanessa’s mum there while she was doing all the flowers which were amazing.  Including the archway over the door.

Inside the church was a very special guest – Monkey – you will hear more about Monkey when I post up the engagement session photos.

Then we quickly shot some formals outside the church

and while the guests left to go to Redhouse Barn we took the couple back inside the church for a couple of creative lighting portraits

From there it was in the cars and off to Redhouse Barn for the wedding reception,  Here Vanessa and Chris had just got out the car, I was still parking up but Simon grabbed some amazing candids.

and last but not least the all important garter shot – we tried to come up with something creative so used Chris’s car, it was a bit of a squeeze due to the size of the dress but I think we pulled it off well !!!

It just leave me to say a HUGE congratulations to Vanessa and Chris on what was an amazing day.

hope you like the sneak peek !

I should also give a huge shout out to Andy and all the staff at Red House Barn who made us feel so special, I can honestly say I have never been so well looked after, and if thats how they take care of the photographers then I can only imagine that the bride and groom felt like royalty for the day.

Getting married at The Old Rectory Redditch

The Wedding of Ellen and Dave

Hello there,

It’s been a while since I posted up a whole wedding but as things start to slow back down after a hectic year I can start to catch up and blog a few recent weddings.  I am going to start off with the beautiful wedding of Ellen and Dave.

Its seems forever ago that Ellen, Dave and Dave’s mum came to visit me and book me for their wedding.  I was pretty excited to be honest as Ellen told me the couple were getting married at The Old Rectory in Redditch in Worcestershire.  The Old Rectory is an amazing wedding venue, its a hidden away boutique wedding venue that ooozes charm and romance and from a photographers point of view, its freaking awesome – the opportunities for photographs are endless.

But back to the wedding of Ellen and Dave, like pretty much all of my weddings I started the day with the bride and that meant at Ellies Salon (the hairdressers)

ellies salon bromsgrove

Ellen and the girls had the place to themselves and it was great, I have to thank the staff at Ellies as I was looked after so well, and drank enough tea and coffee for it to almost be coming out of my ears.

Bridal preparations is probably my second favorite part of the day – I love seeing how the bride transforms from looking like your normal girl to looking like a princess or in Ellens case a movie star (all about the lippy as you will see later)

I should also point out that of all my brides this year Ellen shocked me the most, I should explain a little – when we did the engagement session it was pouring with rain, also Ellen had only just got home and had quickly washed up – in her day job Ellen does not wear a ton of makeup so for the engagement session there was no makeup, her hair because of the rain was pretty much soaked to her head, she wore jeans and a jumper and kind of looked like a semi drowned rat albeit a pretty good looking one – so when I walked in and saw her already 1/2 way thru hair, it was amazing

bridal preparation photos bromsgrove Worcestershire

with the massive big windows the light in Ellies was fantastic and I just sat back with a long lens and blasted away and got some fantastic photos.  I also like using props like the signs to make for interesting backgrounds in the photos

The it was time for the makeup and Ellen disappeared into the back room, I followed and grabbed a few photos

and you just have to have photos of yourself in rollers on your wedding day !

I remember from when I met up with the couple that they wanted some black and white wedding photos, so I made sure to shoot a few throughout the day, I actually like the way this one works and catches the hairspray

black and white wedding photography
and then the transformation was complete

worcestershire wedding photographer

I left Ellies a few minutes before the bride as I wanted to get some shots around The Old Rectory in Redditch but I also wanted to spend as much time with Ellen and the girls before the wedding.

Back at The Old Rectory Wedding Venue

entrance way to the old rectory redditch

The Old Rectory, Redditch - Wedding Venue

The wedding breakfast was being served in the conservatory on the side of the hotel

the conservatory at the old rectory

table photos of weddings at the old rectory
and naturally I took this chance to grab the all important photo of the cake

wedding cakes worcestershire

With a million and one things going on I cant remember who Ellen said made the cake but I remember her telling me it was made by some very special (a family member or friend) and that this made it special – I made sure to get lots of photos of the cake !

The it was off to the room where the wedding service would take place – naturally this was a civil service wedding and The Old Rectory has a purpose built annex that is simply breathtaking.

The wedding room - The Old Rectory Redditch Worcestershire

The attention to detail the owners have put in is second to none, trust me I see lots of wedding venues and this one is first class with icing and a cherry on top for good measure !

wedding photography the old rectory
then I shot back upstairs to get a few photos of Ellen getting ready

Ellen had a beautiful Jenny Packham wedding dress and it was amazing – I love Jenny Packham wedding dresses, they are elegant and etherial and it takes a certain bride to be able to pull them off – this one was really stunning.

Now at this point I will point out while Ellen was getting dressed, her mum, Dave’s Mum and 3 bridesmaids plus a flower girl were all in the room ! – but Ellen asked for a few more sexy / risque but without being naughty if that makes sense photos be taken – I will show you a couple but the rest are for Dave’s eyes only (plus everyone who saw one of them in the evening slideshow – which the couple agreed could be in there !!!!)

bridal boudoir photography worcestershire

boudoir photography

and then mum helping do up the back of the dress

bride being tied in her wedding dress

then it was just a case of waiting around for the wedding to start

at this point I went downstairs and shot a few photos with the fella’s but since I am running out of space you will have to wait to see Dave till the wedding – bit I did get some nice detail shots

and a shot of Dave with is mum

and the flower girl !

Then it was time for the wedding to take place

For the first time EVER since I have been a wedding photographer I actually didnt go into the room for the wedding – I shot all the photos from outside.  The room was filled to capacity but thanks to great lighting and huge big doors I just used a long long lens and held back and captured the wedding from the back of the room – had I gone to the front I would have been too close and would have missed the feeling and atmosphere of the occasion

In the following photo I used the doors to frame the couple

and the big kiss:-)

old rectory wedding photos

and the signing of the register

The it was time for the part to get started,

The couple had only requested a few formal shots so we didnt spend too much time on those but we always like to try to get a group shot of everyone

group photos outside the old rec in redditch

and naturally a confetti shot

photos in the grounds of the old rectory

then as I said before it was a few formals and then onto pictures of the couple

one of the things Ellen and Dave had both said when the booked me was they liked the dramatic style of wedding photography and they wanted a few of my signature style images – these are the ones where I use lights to really make the images pop.

This following few photos were actually taken in broad daylight – I used the garage door by on the side of the hotel which just so happened to be black

dramatic wedding photography

stunning bride and groom wedding photos

then I shot some more traditional but dramatic bridal portraits,

wedding photography worcestershire

worcestershire wedding photography

Following this it was time for the wedding breakfast, speeches and then the night time,  for the sake of the blog post I am skipping the meal and speeches and jumping to after dinner – there was a little time between when the meal finished and the evening was starting so I took the opportunity to shoot a few more photos and play with lights a bit more

As I mentioned before The Old Rectory is a stunning wedding venue and one of the key features is the round windows,  I have seem lots of other photographers photos there and wanted to come up with something just a little bit more different so with a little patients from the couple we came up with this

different wedding photography

and then on the drive way

worcestershire wedding photographer

and with a few friends

The famous David Purslow Love Photo
then as the evening guests started to arrive, I quickly set up for the first dance photos – I like to shoot these in both a silhouette and a well lit way that way the couple has the choice of which they prefer

I think you have to agree Ellen and Dave had an amazing day, they came over my studio today to collect their disk of images to go away to choose for the album and we talked for hours about all the fun on the big day – from what I hear the evening party went on till the small hours and was a blast.

It just leaves me to say a big thank you to all the girls at Ellies  and also to Pam and Michael from The Old Rectory who really did an amazing job of not only looking after me but in putting on a really amazing wedding.

Dave, Ellen good luck, and I hope the love and happiness you shared on your big day stays with you for ever, it really was a fantastic day.

congrats guys.

love
