Hello there, dp here from www.davidpurslow.com – this is my first rant on the blog because I really feel for this couple who have been let down with only 4 days to go till there wedding.
This morning (29th September 2009) I reveived the following email
Could you please let me know if you are available to photograph my son & his fiances wedding on the 3.10.09 in Solva and then St Davids as we have just been notified this evening by his photographer that she is unable to attend due to illness. Would you also let me have a tariff as the price we were paying was £860 which included the items below and we would like to know if you could match the original offer.
We are looking for a paparazzi style storybook album we do not necessarily need anyone to stay until 11.30pm but for at least the 1st dance.
The package you are talking about is the one where I stay all day + evening until 11:30pm
You “ll get A LOT of photographs on a CD. (Around 350 in high resolution.)
+ a luxury printed album 42 pages + another album with the blackboard message and 2 musical slideshow.
The cost of this package is £860.
As well as the album you are untitled to a musical slideshows who can be burn easily for friends and family.
xxxxxxx (I have omitted the photographers name as a professional courtesy)
Customers Name Removed.
This is not the first one of this type of email I have had this year, in fact its the third. I managed to jump in and help out one bride and groom but on this occasion and the other occasion I was already booked.
On my wall in the office I have a printed quote from John Ruskin, the quote was written sometime in the 1800’s and is one of the wisest things I have ever read. It seems to be more true today than at any time in the past.
Todays wedding photography market is saturated with Weekend Wedding Photographers (people who have a full time job and do weddings as a way of making some extra income) These guys generally dont use the latest professional equipment or have sufficient backup equipment should something drastic happen (I DO). A lot dont work with assistants or associate photographers (I DO) who would be able to cover an emergency should the need arise. I am also guessing they dont carry public liability insurance or professional indemnity insurance (I DO) and as it seems a lot letting people down at the very last minute (I DONT) – This is exactly what the quote below refers to.
John Ruskin, 1819-1900 Author, Influential Critic, Philospher
“It’s unwise to pay too much, but it’s unwise to pay too little.
When you pay too much you lose a little money, that is all.
When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything,
because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing you bought it to do.
The common law of business prohibits paying a little and getting a lot – it can’t be done.
If you deal with the lowest bidder, it’s well to add something for the risk you run.
And if you do that, you will have enough to pay for something better.”
In my humble opinion anyone who is offering you full day coverage, disk of images and an album as the very minimum for under £1000.00 is
a. Loosing Money (and may not be around to service you when your wedding come around)
b. Not offering a quality product or using equipment that gives you the very best images etc.
c. Not a full time professional and thus may not have the necessary public liability coverage many venues request and insurances for your piece of mind.
d. Leaves you very little come back in the event they ‘cant make it because of illness’ etc.
Sorry to have to rant this morning but ‘Weekend Wedding Photographers’ seem to becoming a trend and letting the clients down seems to be part of this trend.
Take care, I know professional wedding photography can seem expensive but spend your money wisely and remember :-
THE ONLY LASTING MEMORY OF YOUR WEDDING DAY WILL BE YOUR WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHS !
Ciao for now
